Heads a US Department of Agriculture laboratory that focuses on pest management with natural products
He is best known for his research on herbicide mode of action. He has authored over 450 publications, most of which are weed-related, and has edited 11 books. He is a past president of the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA), the International Weed Science Society (IWSS), and the International Allelopathy Society (IAS), as well as past Chair of the Division of Agrochemicals (AGRO) of the American Chemical Society (ACS). He is a Fellow of WSSA, ACS, AGRO, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is recipient of the International Award for Research in Agrochemicals of AGRO, the Molisch Award of IAS, and the Outstanding International Achievement Award of IWSS. The Universidad del País Vasco awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2008. He is Editor-in-Chief of Pest Management Science.
